AAPA National Model Specifications

EME2 Model Specification

High modulus asphalt (EME2) was recently introduced to Australia. The high stiffness of the material combined with good rut resistance and fatigue performance allows for significant reductions in pavement thickness. This national model specification is intended as a guide for asset owners in the creation of technical specifications for the supply of EME2 asphalt mixes.

CRM OGA & GGA Pilot Specification

This pilot specification sets out the requirements for crumb rubber modified (CRM) open graded asphalt (OGA) surface layers with a nominal maximum aggregate size of 10 mm and 14 mm. The specification also includes requirements for CRM gap graded asphalt (GGA) mixes with a nominal maximum aggregate size of 14 mm and 20 mm.

Airport Asphalt specification

This AAPA national model specification is intended as a guide for asset owners in the creation of technical specifications for the supply of 14 mm maximum sized airport asphalt mixes. The design criteria in this model specification were widely consulted and are based on best current practice. The document brings together years of experience with the supply of asphalt surfacing for airports in Australia.

Airport Spray Sealing Specification

This AAPA national model specification is intended as a guide for asset owners in the creation of technical specifications for the supply sprayed seal solutions for airports. One and two coat seals and reseals are included, with nominal 7 mm, 10 mm and 14 mm crushed rock cover aggregate. The airport seal designs must be validated or adjusted during the seal construction trial process. Therefore, the binder spray rates and aggregate spread rates contained in this specification are indicative or preliminary and are provided for the purposes of tendering and to provide a starting point for the seal construction trial.

The information in this model specification are based on best current practice and on years of experience with the supply of sprayed seal surfaces for airports in Australia

SMA7 Model Specification

This AAPA national model specification is intended as a guide for asset owners in the creation of technical specifications for the supply of stone mastic asphalt mixes with a nominal maximum aggregate size of 7 mm (SMA7). SMA7 materials are typically used as a thin surfacing layer (25 mm – 35 mm). SMA7 will typically contain a polymer modified binder, except under light traffic conditions (defined in this specification), where an unmodified bitumen may be appropriate. The design criteria in this model specification are based on well-established practice. The document brings together years of experience with the supply of SMA7 by industry.
